Lebanon is experiencing an unprecedented economic crisis that led more than half of the population under the poverty line. 35 % of workers are unemployed and food inflation plummeted to nearly 250%.
Regarding healthcare, 82% of Lebanese hospitals are private establishments and nearly 50% of households do not have access to healthcare insurance. Therefore, access to basic healthcare is very unequal for vulnerable populations.
On April 20th, 2019, Les Amis du Liban organised a charity evening under the patronage of H.R.H the Princess of Hanover. This event allowed AMADE and Les Amis du Liban to raise funds for their respective projects.
Representants from both associations went on the field in June 2019 in order to meet historical partners of Monaco and Les Amis du Liban, and to identify projects to be supported in Lebanon.
During this mission, the delegation visited RHUH’s paediatric oncology and neonatology services. This reference establishment has been a partner of Les Amis du Liban for many years in the field of access to healthcare for the most vulnerable children.
In front of the crisis that has struck Lebanon, AMADE and Les Amis du Liban want to support this hospital’s paediatric service by creating a social fund. This fund will benefit children who are hospitalised within neonatology intensive care and oncology services, and whose families do not have the necessary income to afford long term hospitalisations.
This social fund is intended for children from vulnerable families. Eligible children come from families that do not have access to any healthcare insurance, either from the Ministry of Health, Social Security National Fund or other public or private insurance policies.
The fund allows the payment of hospital and medication expenses for these young patients.
A steering committee comprised of representants from all partners is set up. It will oversee the selection and validation of cases that are identified by RHUH’s social service.
The social fund ensures access to healthcare for children coming from low income families.
